Janet Charchuk brought home three
first-place ribbons in running events.
Athletes from all over P.E.I. and New Brunswick gathered at the Evangeline School track in Wellington recently for the Special Olympics P.E.I. Invitational Annual Track Meet.

Over 70 participants competed in various events such as the, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1500-metre races, standing and running long jump, shot put and relays.

The event was well attended by athletes, volunteers and supporters. All who competed gave their personal best.

Ages in the competition ranged from children in the Special Olympics youth programs, all the way up to athletes in their 50s.

It was a true showing of inclusion in Special Olympics, noted meet organizers. "There is a place for every athlete with an intellectual disability."

Special Olympics P.E.I. is a charitable organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Islanders with an intellectual disability through sport. Athletes can participate in either community or competitive sport streams and have the opportunity to train year-round and compete at games held provincially, nationally and internationally.

Alex and I stopped off at this track meet on our way home from the Potato Blossom Run last Saturday. We went to see some of the action and say hello to Josh and his family. Unfortunately we missed the running events but caught some of the field events.

I've known Josh's grandmother online for a number of years now, and we've met in person before, but it wasn't until last year, on day 4 of Alex's Tip-to-Tip Run, that we met Josh.

Josh has since taken up running (he was also competing in long jump) and recently went to a Special Olympics track meet on the mainland (Moncton NB) before this one. It appears he's going places in running already! (Alex has yet to run in a race outside PEI, he came close but we haven't gotten there yet). I'm looking forward to the day Josh joins Alex in a PEI race.

Congratulations to all the SO Athletes!
